Four Field anthropologist with a lifetime of service to communities

Professor Hiram F. “Pete” Gregory is a four-field anthropologist, folklorist, and ethnohistorian. He has taught at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches Louisiana from 1961- Present. He is the curator of the Williamson Museum, founder of the NSU Native American Crafts Day (1971-Present), co-Founder of NSU-Natchitoches Folk Festival (1980-Present), co-author Historic Tribes of Louisiana (1987). Gregory has taught thousands of students who have gone on to be anthropologists, archeologists, historians, tribal historic preservation officers, nurses, teachers, businesspeople, professionals and university presidents. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Contribution to the Humanities Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the Creole Heritage Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Louisiana’s Archaeologist of the Year, and the NSU President’s Distinguished Service Award. He has worked with almost every living cultural group in the state of Louisiana.
